The Social Health Authority scheme, which replaced the National Hospital Insurance Fund in 2024, has transformed healthcare delivery across Nakuru County. With over 690 health facilities in the county, approximately 208 facilities are currently connected to the SHA portal and actively providing services to registered members. This comprehensive network ensures residents have access to quality, affordable healthcare at both public and private institutions.
Understanding SHA Coverage in Nakuru
SHA has approved over 2.4 billion Kenyan shillings worth of claims for Nakuru County facilities, demonstrating the scheme’s financial commitment to healthcare provision. Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital leads the list with more than 132,000 hospital visits recorded under the SHA framework. The government allocated 9 billion shillings to clear outstanding bills from the previous NHIF system, ensuring uninterrupted services at healthcare facilities throughout Nakuru.
The scheme operates on a principle of universal coverage, meaning all registered members access the same standard of care regardless of their contribution amount. This marks a significant departure from previous systems where benefits varied based on payment tiers. Whether a member contributes 300 shillings or substantially more, they receive equal access to comprehensive healthcare services including consultations, diagnostics, medications, surgeries, maternity care, and specialized treatments.
Public Health Facilities Leading the Way
Public health facilities form the backbone of SHA healthcare delivery in Nakuru. The Nakuru County Referral Hospital, formerly known as Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital, stands as the premier Level 5 facility offering comprehensive medical services including specialized care for cancer, dialysis, emergency services, surgery, and maternity care. As a government facility, it provides seamless access to all registered SHA members without requiring upfront payments.
Sub-county hospitals in Naivasha, Molo, Bahati, and Gilgil serve as critical access points for residents across the expansive county. These Level 4 facilities handle a significant volume of patient visits and provide essential services including outpatient care, inpatient admissions, laboratory services, radiology, and pharmaceutical dispensing. Langa Langa Sub-County Hospital has been particularly instrumental in SHA registration drives, helping community members understand and access the new system.
Health centres and dispensaries throughout the county provide primary healthcare services under SHA coverage. Lanet Health Centre and numerous community dispensaries ensure residents in rural and peri-urban areas can access healthcare close to home without incurring transportation costs to larger facilities.
Private and Mission Healthcare Providers
Private hospitals play a crucial role in expanding healthcare options for SHA members. Mediheal Hospital Nakuru, recognized as a Level 5 private facility, offers specialized services including oncology, ophthalmology, cardiology, and advanced surgical procedures. With over 120 beds and four operating theaters, it provides high-quality care that is now accessible to SHA members following the facility’s accreditation.
Valley Hospital along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway combines affordability with modern healthcare delivery, offering 24-hour emergency services, diagnostics, and specialized treatments. Evans Sunrise Medical Centre, operational since 1998, maintains a 75-bed capacity and provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services to SHA-registered patients.
Mission hospitals like St. Mary’s Hospital continue their tradition of compassionate care under the SHA framework. With 150-bed capacity, the facility managed by Assumption Sisters of Nairobi delivers quality healthcare aligned with faith-based values while accepting SHA coverage for all eligible services.
Registration and Access
Nakuru County has distributed registration devices to hospitals throughout the county to facilitate seamless enrollment. Residents can register through multiple channels including dialing *147#, visiting the SHA website at sha.go.ke, or registering in person at any accredited health facility. Community Health Promoters have been trained to assist with household registrations, making the process more accessible to rural communities.
Currently, approximately 841,000 individuals out of Nakuru’s population of over 2.1 million have registered with SHA, indicating significant room for expansion. The county government, under Governor Susan Kihika’s leadership, continues sensitization campaigns to increase enrollment and ensure universal health coverage for all residents.
Future Healthcare Enhancements
The National Equipment Services Programme will upgrade healthcare infrastructure across Nakuru, including establishing a Regional Cancer Center that will serve 24 counties. Plans include installing CT scan equipment in Molo and Bahati facilities, expanding dialysis services, and adding mammography capabilities at the Provincial General Hospital Annex. These enhancements will significantly expand the range of services available to SHA members in Nakuru County.
For optimal healthcare access, residents should verify their SHA registration status, ensure their preferred facility is SHA-accredited, and carry registration details when seeking care. The scheme’s standardized tariffs across all hospitals ensure consistent quality and eliminate the uncertainty of varying private healthcare costs.
