Understanding SHA Coverage in Kakamega
The transition from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to SHA marked a significant shift in Kenya’s healthcare financing system. All public health facilities in Kakamega County, including the county referral hospital, 12 sub-county hospitals, 47 health centres, and 123 dispensaries, automatically accept SHA. Additionally, licensed private and faith-based facilities contracted by the Ministry of Health provide services funded by SHIF.
The healthcare infrastructure in Kakamega supports a combined bed capacity of 3,949 beds, with public sector facilities contributing 2,338 beds, private hospitals offering 197 beds, and mission or NGO facilities providing 1,414 beds. This extensive network ensures that residents across all constituencies have access to quality healthcare without traveling long distances.
Flagship Healthcare Projects
Kakamega County General Teaching & Referral Hospital, formerly the Provincial General Hospital, serves as the primary Level 5 facility. Established in 1926 as a military camp dispensary, the hospital has evolved into a comprehensive teaching and referral centre with 350 beds. It offers 24-hour emergency services, specialized care including CT scans and MRI imaging, surgical procedures, maternity services, and various outpatient departments.
The county government is also developing a new ultra-modern Kakamega County Teaching & Referral Hospital in Lurambi Sub-County with a planned capacity of 750 beds. Once completed and fully operational, this facility will serve as a regional medical hub for Western Kenya and provide training platforms for Masinde Muliro University Medical School.
Recently commissioned Butere County Hospital represents another milestone in expanding healthcare access. President William Ruto pledged Sh150 million under the National Equipment Service Program to equip this Level 4 facility, which will serve residents of Butere, Mumias, Khwisero, and Matungu constituencies.
Accessing SHA Services
To access SHA services at any facility in Kakamega County, residents must register for SHIF through the official SHA platform. Registration can be completed online via the SHA website or at designated registration centres across the county. Once registered, members receive a SHA card or digital identifier that allows them to access services at any contracted facility.
The SHA system covers a comprehensive package of health services including outpatient care, inpatient treatment, maternity services, emergency care, surgical procedures, diagnostic services, and preventive care. Unlike the previous NHIF system, SHA aims to provide universal health coverage ensuring no Kenyan is left behind in accessing essential medical services.
Challenges and Improvements
While SHA acceptance is widespread across Kakamega County facilities, the transition has faced implementation challenges. Healthcare providers have reported difficulties with the new claims processing system, with some facilities experiencing delays in reimbursements. The county government and SHA are working to resolve these technical issues to ensure smooth service delivery.
Some private facilities in Kakamega faced suspension from the SHA program due to compliance issues, emphasizing the importance of verifying a facility’s SHA status before seeking treatment. Patients are encouraged to confirm facility accreditation on the official SHA website.
Kakamega County’s extensive network of SHA-accepting health facilities ensures residents have access to quality healthcare across all sub-counties. From the main referral hospital in Kakamega Town to dispensaries in rural areas, the SHA system is working to provide universal health coverage. As the system continues to mature and technical challenges are resolved, residents can expect improved healthcare access and reduced financial barriers to essential medical services.
