Understanding SHA in Kajiado County

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has transformed healthcare delivery in Kajiado County by replacing the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) with a more comprehensive and inclusive system. Since its official launch in October 2024, SHA aims to advance universal health coverage, ensuring that all residents can access quality healthcare services without facing financial hardship.

According to the Kajiado County Health Department, 51 out of 134 healthcare facilities in the county have successfully registered with SHA. This transition represents a significant step toward making healthcare more accessible and affordable for Kajiado’s growing population. The county government continues working with the national government to ensure complete registration of all health facilities, addressing concerns about insufficient devices and resources needed for effective implementation.

Major Public Health Facilities

Kajiado County operates four main sub-county hospitals that serve as the backbone of public healthcare delivery. Kajiado County Referral Hospital, the largest facility at Level 5, offers specialized services including dialysis, emergency care, and advanced maternity services. The hospital maintains a bed capacity of 138 and is undergoing significant upgrades, including the acquisition of modern MRI and CT scan machines to enhance diagnostic capabilities.

Kitengela Sub-County Hospital has benefited from a partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), receiving comprehensive upgrades to its facilities and equipment. The hospital provides twenty-four-hour emergency services and operates a fully equipped maternity ward, laboratory, and theater. Ngong Sub-County Hospital and Loitokitok Sub-County Hospital similarly provide essential healthcare services to their respective communities, with ongoing improvements to infrastructure and medical equipment.

Ongata Rongai Sub-County Hospital serves the densely populated Rongai area, offering outpatient services, inpatient care, and emergency response. These public facilities ensure that SHA-enrolled residents can access basic and specialized healthcare services close to home.

Private and Community Healthcare Providers

Private hospitals and nursing homes play a crucial role in expanding healthcare access in Kajiado County. Mount Olive Sinai Hospital, established in 1998, was among the pioneering private facilities to accept SHA coverage. Located on Njambi Road in Ongata Rongai, it offers comprehensive services including maternity care, dental services, physiotherapy, and diagnostic imaging with modern equipment.

The Tabernacle International Hospital distinguishes itself as a community-built facility that emphasizes affordable care. Notably, the hospital provides maternity services free of charge while maintaining SHA accreditation for other services. Sucos Hospital, which began as a small dispensary in 2006, has grown into a facility with thirty beds offering general surgery, specialized clinics, and hotel-like inpatient services.

Siana Community Hospital, part of the Shalom group of hospitals, focuses on holistic care through optimal resource utilization. Wama Nursing Home has served the Ongata Rongai community for over twenty years, providing personalized care through its team of twenty-five healthcare professionals. St. Paul’s Hospital Kitengela completes the roster of major private facilities, offering comprehensive medical services including dental care and physiotherapy.

Health Centres and Dispensaries

Beyond hospitals, Kajiado County operates sixteen health centres and seventy-eight dispensaries that provide primary healthcare services. Facilities like Matasia Health Centre, Rongai Health Centre, and Olekasasi Health Centre serve as important access points for routine medical care, maternal and child health services, and disease prevention programs.

Recently established dispensaries including Enkisukudo, Nentonai, Kisharu, Kiloh, and Kumpa are now fully operational and SHA-accredited. These facilities bring healthcare closer to communities in remote areas, reducing the average distance residents must travel to access medical services. The county government continues expanding this network to ensure comprehensive coverage across all sub-counties.

Benefits of SHA Accreditation

SHA accreditation ensures standardized pricing and quality care across all registered facilities. Unlike the previous NHIF system, SHA emphasizes primary healthcare through its Primary Health Care Fund while maintaining coverage for specialized treatments through the Social Health Insurance Fund and Emergency Chronic Illness Fund. This three-pronged approach addresses inefficiencies and ensures vulnerable populations can access necessary healthcare services.

For residents enrolled in SHA, visits to any accredited facility in Kajiado County are covered according to the established benefit package. This includes outpatient consultations, inpatient admissions, maternity services, emergency care, and many specialized treatments. The system aims to eliminate out-of-pocket expenses that previously prevented many residents from seeking timely medical care.

Accessing SHA Services in Kajiado

To utilize SHA services in Kajiado County, residents must ensure their registration is current and their contributions are up to date. The SHA system requires monthly contributions determined through means testing, ensuring affordability based on individual or household income levels. Once enrolled, beneficiaries can visit any SHA-accredited facility and receive services covered under their plan.

The ongoing transition has seen healthcare workers receive training on the SHA claims process to ensure smooth operations. While some challenges remain regarding device availability and system integration, the county government and SHA continue working together to resolve these issues and provide seamless healthcare access to all residents.
