How to Use WhatsApp Buttons to Generate Website Inquiries

A WhatsApp button lets visitors start a conversation with your business in one tap, using an app they already use every day. In many markets, including much of Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe, customers expect to message businesses this way. Done well, it removes the effort of forms and phone calls and brings in inquiries from people who would otherwise leave.

Why WhatsApp works for inquiries

A WhatsApp conversation feels casual and low-pressure. Visitors can ask a quick question, send a photo, share a location and continue at their own pace, without filling in fields or waiting on hold. For you, it creates a direct thread with the customer, often a faster route to a reply and a booking. It is particularly effective for service businesses, local shops, bookings and quick quotes.

Choose the right WhatsApp product

There are two main options.

WhatsApp Business app. A free app for small businesses, with a business profile, quick replies, labels, away messages and a product catalogue. It suits owners and small teams handling a modest volume of chats.

WhatsApp Business Platform (API). A paid service accessed through approved providers, built for larger volumes, multiple agents, automation and integration with other systems. Pricing and rules change, so check Meta’s current terms before choosing.

For most small businesses, the Business app is the sensible place to start.

Create a click-to-chat link

WhatsApp provides a simple link format that opens a chat with your number:

https://wa.me/254700000000?text=Hello%2C%20I%20would%20like%20a%20quote

Use your number in full international format, without plus signs, spaces or dashes. The optional text parameter pre-fills a message, which saves visitors effort and tells you what they are asking about. Make the pre-filled message specific to the page, such as “Hi, I’d like a quote for kitchen installation”.

Place the button where it helps

  • A floating button in the lower corner of the screen, visible as visitors scroll
  • Beside your phone number in the header or contact section
  • On service and pricing pages, near the call to action
  • On the contact page, alongside the form
  • In the footer as a backup

Use the familiar WhatsApp icon and clear wording such as “Chat on WhatsApp” or “Get a Quick Quote on WhatsApp”. Follow WhatsApp’s brand guidelines for the logo, and keep the button from covering content, especially on mobile.

Set expectations

Visitors expect fast replies on messaging apps. State your hours and typical response time near the button, such as “We reply within 15 minutes, 8am to 6pm”. Use the Business app’s greeting message and away message to acknowledge people instantly and set expectations outside working hours.

Prepare to respond well

A button is only as good as the reply behind it. Create quick replies for common questions, such as prices, opening hours and service areas. Use labels to track new leads, quotes sent and completed jobs. Assign someone to monitor messages, and respond personally rather than with a stiff template.

Respect privacy and consent

Tell visitors that clicking will open WhatsApp and share their number with you. Only message people who contacted you or have given consent, and never add people to broadcast lists without permission. Follow data protection rules in your country, and keep customer information secure.

Offer WhatsApp alongside other options

Some visitors prefer calls, email or forms. Provide a few clear options, and let the WhatsApp button complement them rather than replace them. Track which channel each lead came from.

Track results

WhatsApp links do not report conversions on their own, so add tracking. Use analytics events to count button clicks, and add distinct text or a campaign tag to link clicks to pages. Ask new customers how they found you, and compare conversations to completed sales.

The bottom line

A WhatsApp button makes inquiring effortless. Place it clearly, pre-fill a relevant message, state your response times and answer promptly and personally.
