How to Convert Website Visitors into Phone Calls

To convert visitors into phone calls, make your number impossible to miss, make calling a single tap on mobile, and give people a reason to call now. Phone calls are often the highest-value inquiries a website produces. Callers tend to be further along in their decision, ready to talk and more likely to become customers than those who simply browse.

Why phone calls matter

A call is immediate, personal and flexible. It lets customers ask questions, hear your tone and get reassurance in minutes. For urgent, complex or high-value services, many people prefer to speak to someone before committing. For you, a call is an opportunity to answer objections on the spot and build rapport that a form cannot match.

Make your number prominent

Show your phone number in the header of every page, in a large, readable size. Repeat it in the footer, on your contact page and beside calls to action. Do not make visitors search for it or click through a menu. A visible number also acts as a trust signal, suggesting a real business with real people.

Make it tappable on mobile

On phones, the number should be a click-to-call link, so one tap starts the call. This is a simple piece of code that tells the phone to dial:

<a href=”tel:+254700000000″>Call us: 0700 000 000</a>

Use the international format in the link so it works from anywhere. Style it as a button, large enough to tap easily, rather than as small text.

Give a reason to call

A bare number is easy to ignore. Tell visitors why calling is the best choice:

  • “Speak to an expert now”
  • “Call for same-day availability”
  • “Get a quote in five minutes”
  • “Free advice, no obligation”

Tie the wording to your customers’ needs. Emergency services might emphasise speed, while advisory businesses might promise helpful guidance.

Show opening hours and availability

People dislike calling and getting no answer. State your hours beside the number, and highlight 24-hour or emergency availability when you have it. If you are closed, offer a callback form or messaging alternative so you do not lose the visitor.

Use a dedicated or trackable number

A unique phone number for your website lets you measure how many calls it generates. Call tracking services can attribute calls to pages, campaigns and sources, and some record calls for quality and training, subject to local law and clear notice to callers. At minimum, track clicks on your call buttons in analytics. Without measurement you cannot improve.

Place calls to action throughout the page

Add call buttons near key persuasive content, such as after a list of benefits or a testimonial. On mobile, consider a sticky button fixed at the bottom of the screen. Keep the number visible without covering content.

Remove hesitation

Some visitors avoid calling because they fear a sales push or long hold times. Reassure them: “Friendly advice, no pressure”, or “We answer within three rings”. Explain what you will ask during the call and how long it usually takes.

Answer calls well

Conversion does not end at the click. Make sure someone answers during stated hours, greets callers warmly and is prepared to help. Use a voicemail with a clear promise to call back, and return missed calls quickly. Train staff to note where callers heard about you and to ask for the booking or next step.

Support the call with the page

Visitors who call after reading your site should find a consistent story. Make sure prices, services and offers mentioned on the page match what staff say. Consider adding a short “what to have ready when you call” note to speed up the conversation.

Test and improve

Try different wording, button colours and positions. Measure calls per hundred visitors by page and device, and compare call quality, not only quantity. Review recorded or logged calls to learn which questions come up, then answer them on the site.

The bottom line

Phone calls come from visibility, convenience and confidence. Show your number clearly, make it one tap on mobile, give a reason to ring and answer well.
