How to Use Click-to-Call Features on Mobile Websites
Click-to-call turns a phone number on your website into a link that starts a call with a single tap. On a mobile site, it is one of the simplest and most effective ways to generate inquiries. Visitors who would otherwise have to memorise or copy a number, switch apps and dial it by hand can reach you in a second.
Why click-to-call works
People browsing on phones are often in a hurry or in the middle of something else. Typing out a number is a small chore, and small chores lose customers. A tappable number removes it. It also suits the kinds of searches made on mobile, such as “plumber near me” or “emergency electrician”, where the visitor wants to speak to someone now.
How to set it up
The basic method uses a standard link with the tel: prefix:
Call us on 0700 000 000
Use the full international format in the link, with the country code and no spaces or dashes, so it works from any location. The text that visitors see can use your local, readable format. Most website builders and content management systems also have a built-in call button or a field for adding one.
Note that desktop browsers may not know what to do with a tel: link. You can show the plain number on larger screens, or let the link open a calling app if one is installed.
Make every number tappable
Check every place your number appears: header, footer, contact page, service pages and blog posts. Phone numbers typed as plain text are not always recognised by every phone, and treating them inconsistently confuses visitors. Turn each into a link.
Design a prominent call button
Visibility. Put a call button in the header of mobile pages, where it is seen straight away.
Size. Make it large enough to tap comfortably, at least about 44 by 44 pixels, with space around it to prevent mis-taps.
Clarity. Use a recognisable phone icon and a short label such as “Call Now” or “Call for a Free Quote”.
Contrast. Choose a colour that stands out from the page.
Sticky option. A call button fixed at the bottom of the screen keeps the action available as visitors scroll.
Write copy that motivates the call
A button is stronger when it states a reason: “Call for same-day service” or “Speak to an advisor now”. Pair it with reassurance such as opening hours and “Free advice, no obligation”.
Show opening hours
Nobody wants to call a business that is closed. Display your hours near the button. You can even show the button only during opening hours and display a callback form or messaging option the rest of the time. For 24-hour services, say so clearly.
Track calls
Without measurement, you will not know whether the button works. Use event tracking in your analytics tool to record taps on call links. For deeper insight, use a call tracking service with dynamic numbers that show which pages, campaigns or ads produced each call. If you record calls, follow local laws and tell callers.
Be careful with ads
If you run mobile search ads, call extensions let people dial straight from the ad. Make sure your phone lines are staffed during the hours the ads run, or schedule them accordingly.
Provide a fallback
Not everyone can or wants to call, for example in a quiet place or when hearing is limited. Offer a form, WhatsApp or email as alternatives, and make sure those options are as easy to find.
Prepare your team
Click-to-call only pays off if the phone is answered well. Answer promptly, within a few rings, with a friendly greeting. Have clear voicemail instructions and return missed calls quickly. Train staff to capture the caller’s details and to know which services and prices to discuss.
Test on real devices
Tap every number on several phones, both Android and iPhone. Confirm the right app opens and the number dials correctly. Check buttons do not overlap content and that they work in different browsers.
The bottom line
Click-to-call makes contacting you effortless on mobile. Make every number tappable, display a large call button, give a reason to call and track the results.
