How to Create an About Us Page That Builds Trust

An About Us page builds trust when it answers one question honestly: who is behind this business, and why should I rely on them? It is consistently one of the most visited pages on small business websites, because visitors who are close to making an inquiry want reassurance before they hand over their details. A vague page wastes that moment. A clear, human one can tip the decision.

Start with the customer, not the company

The most common mistake is writing a page that is all about you. Visitors do not read it out of curiosity about your history. They read it to judge whether you can solve their problem. Open with a short statement of what you do, who you do it for and the result customers get. Then use your story to support that promise, not to replace it.

For example, “We help family-run farms in Nakuru cut irrigation costs” tells a visitor more than “Founded in 2012, we are a leading provider of agricultural solutions.” The first is specific and checkable. The second could describe thousands of companies.

Show the real people

People trust people, not logos. Include genuine photos of the owner and the team, ideally taken at work rather than in stiff studio poses. Add names, roles and one or two lines about each person’s background or expertise. If you are a one-person business, say so plainly and make a virtue of it: customers know exactly who will answer the phone and do the work.

Avoid stock photos of smiling strangers. Visitors spot them quickly, and a fake team photo damages credibility far more than having no photo at all.

Tell a short, honest story

Explain why the business exists. A good origin story is brief and has a clear thread: you noticed a problem, you had the skills to fix it, and you started the business to do so. Include real details such as the year you started, the town you operate from and the first kind of customer you served. Specifics make the story believable.

Keep it modest. Claims like “the best in the country” invite doubt. Concrete facts persuade better:

  • Years in operation
  • Number of customers or projects completed
  • Professional qualifications, licences or memberships
  • Awards or recognition from known bodies

State your values through behaviour

Many About Us pages list words like integrity, quality and excellence, which mean little on their own. Instead, describe what you actually do. “We give a written quote before any work starts” shows integrity. “We reply to every inquiry within one working day” shows reliability. Each commitment should be something a customer could later hold you to.

Add proof beside the story

The page is stronger when others vouch for you. Place two or three short customer testimonials near the story, with names, locations and, where possible, photos. Include logos of well-known clients or partners if you have permission to show them. Mention any registrations, such as business licences or industry bodies, since these are signals of legitimacy.

If you are new and have little to show, lean on your experience before founding the business. Years spent working for others in the same field still count as relevant credentials.

Make the next step easy

An About Us page should not be a dead end. After building trust, invite the visitor to act. Add a clear call to action at the bottom, such as “Request a free quote” or “Book a call with Wanjiru”, and include your contact details or a short form. Visitors who finish reading are at their most receptive, so do not make them hunt for the next step.

Write in a natural voice

Use first person (“we” or “I”) and plain language. Read the page aloud: if it sounds like a brochure, rewrite it until it sounds like you talking to a customer. Short paragraphs, simple words and a friendly tone make the page easier to read and more believable.

Keep it current

Outdated information quietly undermines trust. Check that team members still work for you, that numbers and dates are accurate, and that photos look like the business as it is today. Review the page at least once a year.

A quick checklist

  1. Does the opening sentence say who you help and how?
  2. Are there real photos and names of the people behind the business?
  3. Is your story short, specific and honest?
  4. Do you back claims with facts, credentials or testimonials?
  5. Is there a clear next step at the end?

A trust-building About Us page is not about impressing visitors. It is about reducing their uncertainty so that contacting you feels like a safe, sensible choice.
