How to Calculate the Cost per Website Lead

Learn how to calculate cost per website lead, including which costs to include, how to compare channels and how to decide what you can afford to pay for a lead.

If you cannot say what an inquiry costs you, you cannot tell whether your marketing is profitable. Cost per lead (CPL) is a simple measure with big consequences: it shows how efficiently your website and campaigns generate potential customers. This guide explains how to calculate cost per website lead, what to include and how to use the number to make smarter decisions.

The Basic Formula

Cost per lead equals total marketing cost divided by the number of leads generated in the same period. If you spend KES 75,000 in a month and receive 50 inquiries, your cost per lead is KES 1,500. The formula is simple, but accuracy depends on counting both sides honestly.

What Counts as a Cost

Many businesses include only advertising spend and overlook other expenses. A fuller picture includes:

  • Advertising spend on search, social and other platforms.
  • Fees paid to freelancers, agencies or content writers.
  • Software and tool subscriptions, such as analytics, call tracking and email tools.
  • Website hosting and maintenance directly tied to lead generation.
  • Staff time spent on marketing, if you can estimate it.

Decide in advance which costs you will include and apply the same rules every month so your comparisons stay consistent.

What Counts as a Lead

A lead should be a genuine inquiry: a form submission, a call, a WhatsApp message or a booking request. Remove spam, wrong numbers, job seekers and duplicates. Counting these inflates your lead total and makes your cost per lead look better than it is. Be strict, because honest numbers are more useful than flattering ones.

Calculate by Channel

A blended figure hides which channels work. Calculate CPL separately for Google Ads, Facebook and Instagram campaigns, organic search and other sources. For paid channels, divide the channel’s spend by the leads it produced. For organic search, divide your monthly content and optimization investment by the organic leads. Organic CPL is often lower in the long run but takes time to build.

Go Beyond Cost per Lead

A cheap lead is not necessarily a good one. Calculate cost per qualified lead by dividing your costs by the number of leads that fit your target customer. Then calculate cost per customer by dividing costs by the number of sales. A channel with a higher CPL but a better close rate may produce customers more cheaply.

Work Out What You Can Afford

Your acceptable cost per lead depends on what a customer is worth. Suppose an average job brings KES 20,000 in revenue with a 40 percent profit margin, which is KES 8,000 profit. If you close 25 percent of leads, each lead is worth KES 2,000 in expected profit. Paying KES 1,500 per lead is workable; paying KES 3,000 loses money on the first sale unless repeat business makes up the difference.

Track It Consistently

Capture spend and leads in a simple monthly table with columns for channel, spend, leads, qualified leads, customers, cost per lead and cost per customer. Use UTM tags so each lead can be tied to a source. Review the table monthly and watch for trends rather than reacting to single weeks.

Ways to Lower Your Cost per Lead

  • Improve your website conversion rate so the same traffic produces more inquiries.
  • Create dedicated landing pages for each campaign.
  • Refine ad targeting and add negative keywords to cut irrelevant clicks.
  • Speed up your pages, especially on mobile.
  • Invest in search-optimised content that attracts leads without paying per click.

Calculating cost per website lead gives you a clear measure of marketing efficiency. Include all relevant costs, count only genuine leads, break results down by channel and compare them with what a customer is worth. With that discipline, you can spend with confidence and cut what is not working.
